Spatial Editing

Continuity Editing: time and events stay continuous, a clear environment is estblished

Cross Cutting: used to create importance and emphasis in two different scenes occurring simultaneously.

Kuleshov Effect: this theory is based on the idea of an audience making a connection between two objects. eg, if the audience is shown an expressionless face, and we eyeline match to a bowl of soup the audience assumes the face wants the bowl of soup. (see video)

Temporal Editing

is simply the use of time, and how time is condensed to show the important parts of storytelling through duration, frequency and order of events.
Good examples of this type of editing are:
cutaways

flash forward

flash back

time ellipsis to show the progression of time in a story

empty frame, where the artist moves out of the frame, but returns in the next shot. (the photo shows the artists hands leaving the frame, then re-entering in a wider shot with the artist)

Rhythmic Editing

This form of editing is based on any connection between the length and speed of shots and the music.
For Example: fast cuts that match the fast movement of the music.
Sometimes shot lengths are extended in order to create tension. Quick cuts can create excitement and a fast pace.

Graphic Editing

This is demonstrated by mise-en-scene and cinematography and uses more graphical and pictorial elements.

For example,
Graphic Match: This is when two or more shots are linked by featuring similar graphics - such as a football in one shot and then the sun in the next shot, or man opening a can of beer, in the next shot a different man opening and drinking the beer.

Graphic Continuity: When specific colour or lighting levels are constant throughout a music video.

Performance

Representation

CLUB: tinsel, balloons, drinks, girls in low cut clothes, boys in hoodies etc., fashionable – connotes youth

TAXI: travelling through London to club, building up to the ‘good time’. Girl wearing big glasses and playing up to camera

- Hand held camera, voyeur – the audience is at the club with the artists.

- talking straight to the camera, talking to the audience

- interesting angles, low angles of women dancing from the PoV of the men?

Fast editing:

- flash forward in taxi, visually exciting – can’t wait to get to get to the club

- flashes, match the strobe lighting in the club

- cutaways and split screens to show all the young people in the club having a ‘good time’

- Girls playing up to the camera, trying to get attention

- matches lyrics (eg, ‘Champaign popping’ – someone opens some Champaign)

- young people having a good time

- Rapper on the couch surrounded by women, stereotype of the ‘pimp’ figure in rap music

- girls in short clothes, stereotype of young women going out clubbing. Playing up to the camera, attention seeking?

- taxi in London, audience makes the connection.

The video relies heavily on stereotypes to create representations of the ultimate good time in a club.

Mood Board

- album covers aren't conventional, this genre goes against the stereotype
- shows a wide range of artist (not typically male or female)
- female artists have a 'dirty' look - ripped clothes etc. not the clean cut image of pop - distorted/corrupted?
- live performances stripped back, just the artists (perhaps intricate lighting) no back dancers etc. just artists and their instruments

Low Budget Music Videos

Tuning

Mise-en-Scène

Cinematography

Editing

Performance

- natural, high key lighting that matches the tone of the music.

- setting in a car, a field and a forest – telling a story.

- policemen and forensic officers, images emphasising the implication within the lyrics.

- tracking/gliding movement, reinforces the tone of the music.

COMPOSITION two people in the foreground, vast background

- out of focus, dreamlike – fits with lighting and camera movement.

- non-linear storytelling, we see police discovering a hair band followed by a ginger-haired woman throwing the hair band away in slow motion

- black out at the end, finality.

- play with diegetic/non-diegetic sound – man lip-syncs words which appear through background

- sped-up image of road kill

- cutaways of scenery.

- sad, mourning. A couple hugging.

Hifana

Mise-en-Scène

Cinematography

Editing

Performance

- kitchen, low key lighting

- restaurant, dark, black background

- low budget costumes: bad wigs, kitchen overalls etc.

- stationary

- zoom (variations: crash zoom etc), fits the genre

- poor quality cameras

- actions match the beat of the music.

- Visual Effects: speed up cooking, 5*s graphic, vegetable explosion

- fast motion

- comedic

LOW BUDGET TECHNIQUES:

- use of cut away can help create a mood in step with the mood of the music.

- comedic/inventive performance distract attention from poor camera quality

- cheap props like balloons, simplistic locations can be made to seem more interesting.

- change clothes, makes the video seem more expensive and implies the artist is rich because they can afford lots of new clothes

- interesting angles and hand-held camera is a lot more visually aesthetic compared static camera angles.

Analysis of a Music Video

Brief

To create a promotion package for the release of an album to include a music video, together with a cover for the release and a magazine advertisement. I will be working with Sam Liddle and Shadia Jampeji.
