Andrew Goodwin - theory of music video construction

Andrew Goodwin indentified 3 different approaches to the structures of music videos, according to the relationship between sound and image.

Illustation
Music - cuts occur to the beat of the song
Lyrics - show the literal meaning of the lyrics
Band Image - represents the artist in their simplest form; as a performer (only show singing, dancing, playing musical instrument)

Amplification
Music - cuts occur on and off the beat in order to emphasise certain elements
Lyrics - a narrative portraying the lyrics through their theme and implication
Band Image - band takes on a role within the story of the video

Disjuncture
Music - cuts occur off the beat (however, could be seen as a sign of a badly constructed video)
Lyrics - images do not appear to link with lyrics or theme
Band Image - well established bands take this risk, do not dress/portray themselves in a way the audience expects

Good work, images help show you understand the theory.
